Frequently Asked Questions
General
Speech and language pathologists diagnose and treat infants, children, and adults with a variety of speech, language, communication, cognitive, feeding, and swallowing concerns. They work in a variety of settings including the private sector, hospitals, schools, assisted living facilities, home health, and universities.
Each client is unique in their speech and language needs. There are a variety of factors that contribute to therapy frequency and duration. The speech and language pathologist will recommend a frequency for treatment based on the results of the evaluation and/or therapy goals. Therapy can be provided up to several times per week to occassional consultants for skill maintenance.
As treatment progresses and our clients begin to improve their targeted skills, new goals may be added and/or previous goals may be modified. Based on the goals and response to therapy, the frequency and duration of treatment may be modified.
Foundations believes that it is important to practice targeted skills in the home environment with the family members our clients interact with daily. Therefore, when our clients are ready to practice their newly acquired skill outside of the therapy time, a home program is created for continued practice. Every home program is individualized targeting our client's specific goals to enhance the carryover and generalization of skills between therapy sessions.
If you would like to make a referral or a request for a speech and language evaluation or therapy, please contact us by phone at 540.287.6650, email lindsay@buildingspeechfoundations.com, or submit a form on the website under the Contact Us section. We look forward to hearing from you!
The speech and language pathologists (SLP) at Foundations Speech and Language Services have completed a Masters program in Speech and Language Pathology from an accredited college or university in which they must complete the coursework, conduct therapy in a variety of areas under the supervision of a certified SLP, and pass an examination assessing their knowledge of the field given by their university and another examination that is taken nationally by every graduating SLP student. The SLP's then go through a 9-month fellowship in which they are working under the supervision of a certified SLP. Once they have successfully completed this fellowship, they are certified by our governing board, American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association (ASHA), obtaining the Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC). They also must be licensed in Virginia as an SLP. Finally, in an effort to continue their education and to stay on top of the newest types of therapy ideas, techniques, and research, our SLP's take continuing education courses yearly.
Yes, Foundations Speech and Language Servces sees both children and adults. Foundations does speech, language, and oral motor evaluations with children, and speech evaluations for adults. We do therapy for speech, language, and feeding disorders for children and therapy for speech and language disorders for adults.
Foundations Speech and Language Services does not have an office for therapy. Therapy occurs in the homes or daycares of our clients. This allows for a natural enviroment using materials that are familiar to the child and their family. Therapy at home for adults allows for functional therapy to occur working in a natural space. This allows for greater carryover and generalization of newly acquired skills, skills that have been rehabilitated, and the maintance of the speech, language, or feeding skill.

Billing
Like many small private practices, Foundations Speech and Language Services does not have the internal billing and collection system to accept insurance and work with major insurance companies. We will provide you with all of the necessary paperwork to submit to your insurance to seek reimbursement, including a treatment plan and a Superbill which will have the treatment codes, diagnosis codes, and all the necessary information for your insurance company at the end of every month. It is advised that you speak with your insurance provider prior to starting speech and language therapy to determine if reimbursement is possible. Foundations Speech and Language Services is not responsible for the insurance companies decision regarding reimbursement and payment is expected in full at the time of service unless other arrangements have been made prior to the start of therapy.
